To celebrate Earth Day/Week the 6th and 7th grade Science classes were organized to cleanup our school campus.  For 2 days the campus was allowed to remain “untouched” until we started our cleanup activities.  Each class was given an assigned area over the 2 day period in which they sorted and counted every piece of trash that they could find.  Afterwards all of the data was compiled onto an Excel spreadsheet and then made into bar graphs to be analyzed by each class.  Here is what we found…check it out.

In this lab students were asked how the water cycle affects the world around them.  They saw a model of the water cycle that was made up of  lamp, clear plastic bin, glass beaker with ice, plastic bag with sand, and water.  Students had to be able to show what the materials truly are and what they represent in the water cycle in a drawing that was labeled.

Afterwards students were to make a comic book about the water cycle.  They were to take their water molecule through any 3 steps of the water cycle.  I selected one student’s comic book that was made into a “video”.  I hope you enjoy his work, I know I did, it is truly amazing.  Thank you Marcus for sharing your talent with us.

Human skull exhibiting truama

Human skull exhibiting trauma

At our recent Science Club meeting we had a Forensic Anthropologist as our guest speaker.  We  had wonderful lecture filled with amazing information.  Afterwards we were treated to  bones lab that was set up where the students were able to go and see the different things that were spoken about in the lecture for example: trauma, differences between male and female bones, differences in the ages, and the differences between human and non-human bones.  It was a very educational and fascinating afternoon!

  1. Describe what a forensic anthropologist does.  How is that different from the county coroner or medical examiner?
  2. What was your favorite part of the lab portion?  What did you learn that you did not know before?
  3. What did you learn from the lecture portion that you did not know before?

Penny with water

Penny with water

In this experiment students were asked to predict how many drops of clean water vs soapy would stay on the heads side of a penny before falling off.

What did you learn  in this experiment about water?  What improvements could be made the next time this experiment is done?
